If you are doing some home improvements, you might be in need of a roll-off dumpster. These are an excellent option when you are going to be throwing out a lot of remodeling waste, from old carpeting to drywall and plumbing fixtures. The dumpster will be delivered to your home, then picked up when you are done with it. The problem is that your neighbors might also make use of it when you're not around, assuming it's no big deal. To avoid this from happening and keep them from filling it up before you are done with your remodeling project, follow these tips.
Request a Roll-Off Dumpster With a Lock
You might have to pay a little extra for this, but many roll-off dumpster companies provide options where you can get a dumpster that comes with a lock. This allows you to close the lid of the dumpster and keep it secure when you aren't home, such as during the week while you are at work or when you are picking up more supplies. However, one thing to note is that you will need to be able to close the lid to lock it. If you have already started loading it up with oversized materials, they might reach above the top edge of the dumpster, no longer allowing you to close and lock it.
Get the Dumpster on the Final Day of Renovations
This isn't ideal, but it is an option if you think you will have a big problem with others using your dumpster. It is much more tempting to your neighbors when you have the dumpster for several days or even weeks while finishing the remodeling project at a slower pace. You are probably not home all the time, giving them free reign over using it for their own trash. However, if you choose to only rent it near the end of the remodeling project and throw everything away at once, you can reduce the risk considerably.
Don't Park it On the Street
Having your roll-off dumpster parked on the street in front of your house makes it a lot more tempting to your neighbors as well. Another option is to park it in front of your house on the driveway, if there is room for it. Consider even parking it directly in front of the garage, then parking your vehicle behind it. Many neighbors won't be so bold to walk up to your house to throw away their own trash.
